LOW-INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) in Georgia is a federally funded program that helps low-income households afford essential home energy costs. Its goal is to prevent dangerous heating or cooling emergencies—like utility disconnections or unsafe living conditions—by providing direct assistance to qualified families and individuals. LIHEAP is administered throughout the state by local Community Action Agencies (CAAs), like Enrichment Services Program, and benefits are issued directly to energy suppliers on behalf of eligible households.
To qualify for LIHEAP in Georgia, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or legally admitted immigrant.
- Have gross household income at or below 60% of Georgia’s State Median Income (varies by household size).
- Be fully responsible for paying energy costs for the home’s primary heating (and sometimes cooling) source.
Priority access is typically given to seniors (65+) and medically homebound residents before general eligibility periods begin. Assistance can include energy bill payments and crisis support for households facing immediate threats, such as imminent disconnection. Applications are taken on a first-come, first-served basis and funds are limited. You must get an appointment to complete an application.
When & How to Apply
LIHEAP application periods in Georgia vary by season. Heating assistance typically opens in December or January for seniors and medically homebound residents, and cooling assistance usually begins in April, depending on funding. For appointment availability, please click here.

Heating appointments will open for the general public on Monday, February 2, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. in Muscogee County and at 2:00 p.m. in all other counties.
